Every great Sports Peformance facility begins with a dream, however, this dream was only capable of forming because of a few failures. Here's my story:
It was Spring 2008 in Okinawa, Japan and in only a few short months I would have finally completed my 6 years of military service. Having played Semi-Pro football for the USAFJ League, I had my eyes set on attending a certain school on the exact opposite side of the world. East Carolina University. I wasn't an amazing player, but I knew I had what it took. The right attitude and a very unique skill set. After 9 months of good training, I should be prepared to walk-on. Right?
It's not that easy. In the middle of my so-called training program, I suffered a devastating injury to my right knee, tearing my ACL, MCL, and lateral meniscus. I read numerous articles on comebacks, and I truly believed that I could rehab quick enough to still be ready for the season. And I couldn't have been more wrong. This is where my long journey began.
Several months of wasted time on a very poor rehabilitation program led me to nothing more than ANOTHER torn ACL. I knew absolutely nothing about this stuff, I was just trusting other people and doing what I was told. Well, it took me 4 more years and a Master of Science in Injury Prevention and Human Performance to finally understand the dynamics behind why I missed my calling. Looking back, I wasn't just doing the wrong things, I was doing the things that were actually making my condition worse! And before my first injury, I wasn't doing a single movement, exercise, or workout that was geared towards injury prevention!
Knowing what I know now, I look back on 2008 and can't help but to think that a more professionally designed strength and conditioning program would have given me at least an opportunity. With customized program design, exercise selection, and a little determination, I would have had the necessary tools to reach my full potential, instead of living with a few extra "what ifs."
Here at Functions of Life, that is our goal. We want to give our clients and athletes an opportunity. We want them to reach their absolute potential on and off the field, in and out of the office. Not only that, but we want to create individuals that can overcome challenges, break down barriers, and blossom into physical forces of nature that live without limitations. Once that is accomplished, we call that...SUCCESS.
